Horrible Tracking and New Content

July 11th, 2009

Hey guys,

I’ve been pretty busy with this launch.  I had alot of unforseen problems.  I tried my best to work through them but it became pretty obvious that the affiliate tracking on the merchant’s end simply was not working. I kept going back and forth with the affiliate manager for the launch. He was a great help but that didn’t save the fact that my sales were not showing up.

I didn’t expand the campaign nearly as much as I had planned because I was not being credited for my sales. I basically had to tell the affiliate manager each time I made a sale (the only way I knew was when someone contacted me for my bonus). He would then go in and track the sale down and check whether it was mine or not. Most of the time it was, but hadn’t been credited.

This is honestly the worst experience I’ve had with affiliate tracking. It left me with little to no confidence in their system so I was forced to keep my campaign extremely targeted.

Right now, I’m working out my plan so that I can show you everything I would have done IF my sales had been properly tracked. This has really reinforced the fact that I need to have my OWN tracking in place at all times. I will admit, I get lazy sometimes and fail to setup tracking. In the future, I will be much more adament about tracking.

I will be out of town for a few days starting Monday, but I will have some new content up before then. I will show you what I did, and I will also show you what I would have done to expand the campaign. This whole thing was extremely disappointing to me as I am certain I lost out on alot of money by not expanding my campaign. But given the poor tracking, I just couldn’t bring myself to spend more money on traffic when I was not being credited for direct sales. The affiliate manager insisted that sales were being tracked 100% after a hiccup in the system for the first 48 hours…but this didn’t give me much confidence.

I will give you more details in the case study. Despite my bad experience with the merchant, I still made some sales and had some successes with a very limited campaign. But no worries, I will still lay out the whole case study. I will show you where I left off and what I would have done if things were working properly.
